mandie nov

On behalf of the Mandie Phillips Memorial Association, we are SO excited to announce that we have surpassed last year’s numbers with a whoppin’ $36,000! We could not have achieved these results without the outstanding community support that you all have given to us. Your generosity and encouragement will not only help local students in our community achieve a higher education, but also keeps Mandie’s legacy alive.
With this money, the Mandie Phillips Memorial Foundation will be TRIPLING the amount of scholarships we will be awarding for Fall of 2018 with three $5,000 scholarships. In addition, we will be contributing $17,500 into the scholarship endowment to ensure that this scholarship will be able to be awarded for years to come. Lastly, we will be donating $3,500 to the Cape Fear Chapter of the American Heart Association.
The Mandie Phillips Memorial Scholarship is directed for high school students from New Hanover County who plan on attending Appalachian State University. Preference will be given to students who have an excellent academic record with demonstrated service in the community and leadership experience. An essay is required as part of the application process.
To be considered for this scholarship, applications must be received by November 18th, 2017. Students can apply at the following link: https://scholarships.appstate.edu/apply/first-year-students.
Thank you again for your outstanding generosity and continuous support. We couldn’t have done it without you guys!

The third annual Mandie Phillips Memorial Fishing Tournament will take place September 20-22 2018.  One hundred percent of net proceeds of this family-friendly event will go to help local Appalachian State University college students with their higher education expenses.

The Fish for Mandie Tournament Executive Committee is pleased to announce that Elizabeth Grace Galphin, Mary Connelly Wade, and Charles Stanfield are the recipients of the 2018 Mandie Phillips Memorial Scholarships.

Each student has been awarded $5,000 towards his/her education expenses at Appalachian State University.

Heather Visingard, Director of Donor Stewardship at Appalachian State University states, “We are fortunate to have alumni and friends like you who truly value the exceptional education that Appalachian provides. Your support makes a difference in the lives of our students who, in turn, will go on to make a difference in the world.”

The inaugural fishing tournament was established in 2016 at Motts Channel Seafood, and is coordinated by family and friends of Mandie Phillips.  Before she passed in 2014, Mandie was a beloved employee at Motts Channel Seafood and a senior at Appalachian State University, majoring in political science with a minor in physics.

The mission of the Mandie Phillips Memorial Fishing Tournament is to fulfill Mandie Phillips’ legacy by providing scholarships to New Hanover County high school students to help with their higher education expenses.

“Most people say that the four years in college are the best years of one’s life and, for some, it is on the behalf of donors like yourself that these years are made possible,” asserts 2018 Scholarship recipient Charles Stanfield.  “I have the utmost respect for your willingness to help students ease the burden financially and I thank God for you all every single day.”

The third annual Mandie Phillips Memorial Fishing Tournament will take place September 20-22, 2018. Alison and Gene Long at Motts Channel Seafood will once again host the event. The tournament has both inshore/offshore divisions and will be preceded by a captain’s meeting with dinner and live music on Thursday, September 20. In addition to the tournament, an awards dinner with live music, silent auction and raffle is open to the public to attend. Tickets can be purchased online here or at the door.

To be considered for this scholarship, applications for admission to Appalachian State University must be submitted by November 1st, 2018. Additionally, applications for Academic and Merit Scholarship Opportunities and Admission must be completed by November 15th, 2018.
