End of Summer on the Coast: Nature’s Big Transition

Coastal transition

As the last weeks of summer fade along the Carolina coast, life on the water begins to shift in more ways than one. While beachgoers and boaters enjoy those final long days, our local wildlife is also preparing for the change of seasons. From migratory birds filling the skies to sea turtles completing their nesting journey, the end of summer is a remarkable time to witness the rhythms of nature here in Coastal North Carolina.

Sea Turtles Wrapping Up Nesting Season

Every summer, sea turtles return to the beaches of Wrightsville and surrounding barrier islands to lay their eggs. By late August and early September, many of these nests have already hatched, and the last hatchlings are making their way down the sand toward the ocean. It’s a fleeting but unforgettable sight — tiny turtles scrambling toward the waves, guided by instinct.

Local volunteers and conservation groups help monitor nests and ensure the hatchlings have a safe journey, reminding us just how important it is to protect our beaches and waterways.

The Return of Migratory Birds

As temperatures shift, coastal skies come alive with the movement of migratory birds. Shorebirds, pelicans, and even ospreys begin their seasonal journeys south. Some are just stopping by our marshes, inlets, and sounds to rest and refuel before continuing on, while others will spend the cooler months right here along our coast.

For birdwatchers, this is prime time — mornings on the Intracoastal or evenings near the marshes offer incredible opportunities to spot species that only pass through during migration.

A Season of Change on the Water

The transition from summer to fall is about more than shorter days; it’s about the coastal environment shifting gears. The waterways around Wrightsville Beach — including our own Motts Channel — become quieter as vacationers leave, but nature is as active as ever. It’s a reminder that living here means sharing this place with remarkable wildlife that depends on the same waters we do.
